Together with Society
HitachiSoft always gives consideration to what it can do for society, contributing through various activities such as voluntary cleaning in the local community, nature conservation, support of cultural and educational activities, donations, and support of post-disaster reconstruction.
Cultural and Social Activities
IT and information ethics Class
Continuing on from the previous fi scal year, young engineers taught classes on technology and information ethics in July 2009 as part of the citizenship curriculum at Tokai Junior High School located near HitachiSoft's head offi ce in Shinagawaku. The classes, entitled “The Light and Dark Sides of Information,” were taught to 7th graders (1st-year junior high) for two days. Students learned not only about the convenience that information technology brings but also problems that arise in this information society, such as unoffi cial “behindthe- scenes school websites.” We hope children will develop the ability to defend themselves against such dangers when working with IT.
Comment
I enjoyed teaching this class. My supervisors and coworkers were cooperative, and the students were attentive in class. Being able to offer something to the children helped me feel a renewed sense of pride and connection toward the company and encouraged me in my daily work. I hope other employees will be active in taking advantage of this valuable opportunity.
IT educational course
In September and October 2009, HitachiSoft employees taught classes on information technology to 9th graders (3rd-year junior high) of Tokai Junior High School who were interested in IT. In this elective course in technology education called “Fundamentals of Information Technology,” students learned about the inner workings of computers and how to write simple programs for operating robots, a curriculum utilizing the unique technologies and skills HitachiSoft possesses.
Satellite Image Distribution Service
HitachiSoft offers a satellite Imagery service free of charge from U.S.-based DigitalGlobe’s QuickBird satellite for supporting post-disaster reconstruction and education. Recent examples include the reconstruction efforts following the Sumatra Earthquake and the sending of images to the Hamagin Space Science Center for education.

StarBoard (interactive whiteboard)
Providing schools with StarBoard and technology support enables us to contribute to the “School Twinning” project, which encourages cross-cultural exchange with overseas schools.
IT and information ethics Class

Students attend an IT and
information ethics class
In November and December 2008, young engineers taught classes on technology and information ethics entitled, “What is IT?” at Tokai Junior High School in Shinagawa-ku located near HitachiSoft’s head office. The purpose was to provide students with the ability to defend themselves against the serious issues that children face in this information society, such as unofficial “behind-thescenes school websites.” There are plans to continue offering this class as one of our CSR activities.
Contributing Locally
HitachiSoft Brass Band

HitachiSoft regularly holds concerts to provide a place for people to appreciate music and cultural exchange. We also hold joint performances with groups such as Tokai Junior High School so that local residents as well as our employees can enjoy the concerts. HitachiSoft further deepened relationships with local residents in October 2009 when it participated as a company for the fi rst time in the Shinagawa General Welfare Center’s “Autumn Festival,” and in December when it participated together with 16 other organizations and groups enthusiastic about music in performances of the “Shinagawa Culture Festival.”
Participation in the Shinagawa City community forum meeting

Shinagawa City has been deliberating on the future of culture and sports activities and community development, and in March 2010 mapped out its “Vision for the Promotion of Culture and Sports.” As one of many active bodies in the city, HitachiSoft participated in a community forum meeting held in June 2009 as part of those deliberations. We shared information on activities we were pursuing to deepen relations and partnerships with the regional communities around our head offi ce, and exchanged opinions with other organizations that have a long-standing history of cultural pursuit within the city.
1 Day Shop

HitachiSoft hosted at its head offi ce a special, voluntary sales drive featuring products made by people with disabilities called “1 Day Shop” for businesses supporting the employment of the disabled. 1 Day Shop aims to contribute to the welfare of society by supporting disabled people who manufacture products at various disability employment facilities. All sorts of products were sold at the event, including bags made in collaboration with a well-known designer, as well as baked sweets made from select ingredients. The head offi ce turned into a bustling marketplace as many employees shopped for goods and chatted with the vendors.
Assisting Developing Countries
Table for Two

HitachiSoft participates in Table for Two to contribute to society and to raise employees’ awareness of the importance of safeguarding oneself against lifestyle diseases. The employee cafeteria offers a healthy menu, and HitachiSoft participates in Table For Two, a Japanese social contribution program in which ¥20 from every meal purchased is donated to provide school lunches in developing nations (¥20 is equivalent to the cost of a single school lunch in a developing nation). Between October and December 2009, we offered a special Table for Two menu as part of the Better Health campaign of our “Building a Vital Workplace” program.
Eco Bottle Cap Program

Volunteer employees collect caps from plastic PET bottles and donate them to recycling businesses. The money from the program is used to fund vaccinations for children around the world.

Donating used books
HitachiSoft helps to build and repair schools in developing countries by donating company books that are no longer used to the School Support Program run by the specified nonprofit organization, JEN.
Music Program Support

We support the Japan-Romania Cultural Exchange Concert, which aims to promote music exchange between Japan and Eastern Europe. This concert is held every year during Disabled Person’s Week and invitations are extended to persons with disabilities and residential care institutions.
