- Need of No Additional Client License to Facilitate Companywide Use of Adobe® PDF -
HitachiSoft (Hitachi Software Engineering Co., Ltd. based in Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo with Takeo Ogawa as the CEO and president) launched on August 17, 2004 the Renopulse®/Extension Client, a tool for converting client's Office files into Adobe® PDF(Portable Document Format)files using the Adobe6reg; Document Server (*1), a business server product of Adobe Systems Incorporated (based in Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo with Kan Ishii as the representative director and president).
The Adobe® PDF is a widely accepted document format thanks to its user friendliness allowing easy representation of any paper medium or Office file print image. The Adobe® PDF, on the other hand, is widely used for official documents to be opened at web sites and confidential documents to be sent by e-mail since it features small file sizes with security setting and allows easy viewing in similar format independent of the end client's PC type. The software for converting document files into Adobe® PDF has been spreading, but companywide use has so far been difficult because of the additional license cost needed for individual client users.
The "Renopulse®/Extension Client", being linked with the "Renopulse®/Server Library (*2)" on the server side, will enable each client to perform conversion into Adobe® PDF by calling the respective function from the Adobe® Document Server. Since the Renopulse®/Extension Client license cost does not increase with the number of clients, companywide use of the Adobe® PDF can be promoted.
Operation using the Renopulse®/Extension Client is quite simple as follows: Select the file to be converted from the Explorer as Microsoft's file management software, and select Adobe®R PDF generation from the menu displayed by right-clicking the mouse. Convertible file formats are Word, Excel, PowerPoint® and PostScript® (*3) in the Microsoft Office package.

The Renopulse®/Extension Client can also apply certain restrictions such as print/edit prohibition and need of password entry for file opening at the time of Adobe® PDF conversion, and insert a digital watermark, header and footer.
From the viewpoint of security, safe document transfer is possible not only between companies but also within a company to satisfy the need of the day.
The Renopulse®/Extension Client is delivered in the same package with the Renopulse®/Server Library that is launched on the same day.
Application system development by using the Adobe® Document Server is possible through the GUI using the Renopulse®/Designer (*4).
Use of the Adobe® Document Server for Reader® Extensions license in combination with the Adobe® Document Server will enable the Adobe® PDF access privilege (use of partial PDF edit function by the Adobe® Reader®) by the Renopulse®/Extension Client to be granted.
Mr. Kan Ishii, the president of Adobe Systems Incorporated commented as follows to celebrate the release of this Renopulse®/Extension Client:
"I am very glad of the release of the Renopulse®/Extension Client. Because it will enable each client to call the Adobe® PDF generating function from the Adobe® Document Server, each client can easily provide information with thorough security control. I firmly believe that the Adobe® PDF and Adobe® Document Server will satisfy a wide variety of customers thanks to the strong engineering and peripheral solution development capabilities backed by positive marketing activities."
HitachiSoft will supply the RenopulseR/Extension Client both directly and indirectly through dealers. The target sales quantity in the initial year is 500 sets. HitachiSoft, in cooperation with Adobe Systems Incorporated, plans further business expansion in the future by positively proposing customers with valuable business solutions based on the Adobe®PDF as Renopulse® series.
System overview
The Renopulse®/Extension Client installs the PDF conversion function in the user client environment. The Renopulse®/Extension Client, linked with the Renopulse®/Server Library on the PDF conversion server side, calls the PDF creating function of the Adobe® Document Server from the client side to perform conversion into Adobe® PDF. For Office file conversion into PDF, it uses the printing function of the Microsoft® Office on the PDF conversion server side. Since the client needs only the license for the Microsoft® Office, no additional cost is required even if the number of clients for the Renopulse®/Extension Client increases.

(*1) AdobeR Document Server
This server software product of Adobe Systems Incorporated dynamically generates Adobe® PDF on the server side based on the data from various resources. It was launched in January 2004, and has been adopted by many companies for "automatic Adobe® PDF generation from core application systems", "attached file or XML data extraction from electronically applied Adobe® PDF files" and "insertion of digital watermark to Adobe® PDF documents for security".
(*2) Renopulse®/Server Library
This is the base for development and execution of the system using the Adobe® Document Server available from HitachiSoft. It provides the library for linkage between the Adobe® Document Server and Web applications. The Renopulse®/Extension Client uses this library and calls the Adobe® Document Server functions. The RenopulseR/Server Library03-00 released this time is added with the Web service function and the function for conversion from Office files into PostScript® files.
(*3) PostScriptR
This page description language developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated allows high quality printing. In the environment installed with the Adobe® Postscript® driver, conversion into PostScript® is possible from all applications having printing commands.
(*4) RenopulseR/Designer
This is a GUI tool for improving application system development using the Adobe® Document Server provided by HitachiSoft. It allows schematic designing of the Adobe® PDF operation/creation process flow with immediate confirmation of the result of execution at the Adobe® Document Server. In the Renopulse®/Designer03-00 launched this time, the functions for use of enhanced Renopulse®/Server Library functions such as Adobe® PDF creation from Office files through GUI have been added.
