DNASIS Taxon Influenza Identification System makes it possible to identify infection source using gene data for influenza viruses
TOKYO, June 24, 2009 - HitachiSoft, today announced that it has released the DNASIS Taxon Influenza Identification System. Sold as an integrated laptop PC system, the solution enables identification of influenza virus types using gene data. The official launch date is June 25, 2009.
The DNASIS Taxon Influenza Identification System can be used to quickly and easily deduce and identify influenza virus types, by simply entering gene data obtained from DNA sequencers. The systems are sold as integrated laptop PC systems that are pre-configured with necessary identification software and an up-to-date influenza gene database. Customers can use the systems right out of the box to identify influenza virus types using gene sequence data.
Whereas existing solutions in the form of simplified detection kits and real-time PCR assay can only identify the virus type (e.g., A-type H1N1), the DNASIS Taxon Influenza Identification System enables identification of virus species through phylogenetic systematics at the genetic level, making it possible to deduce the source of infection and implement appropriate influenza countermeasures.
The recent global spread of new influenza strains has created an influx of new gene data for influenza viruses, as data is being constantly added to public gene databases in Japan and abroad. The DNASIS Taxon Influenza Identification System automatically downloads the latest gene data for influenza viruses from the public database of the United States National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), providing users with the latest database information to aid in influenza virus identification.

The DNASIS Taxon Influenza Identification System also supports multiple alignment and phylogenic tree preparation that are crucial features for
identifying the source and route of infection. In addition, users have the option to customize the gene database that DNASIS Taxon uses for
identification, by adding proprietary and unpublished gene data or registering such data as a new database, making it possible to build and use
a proprietary gene library according to the user's needs.
HitachiSoft will target sales of 100 systems in the first fiscal year of release.

DNASIS Series of Bioinformatics Solutions
HitachiSoft has been offering gene testing and analysis services since September 2006, and as part of these services has launched services that enhance the efficiency of hygiene testing, and support microorganism identification in R&D such as for fermented foods. The DNASIS series of bioinformatics software solutions enables identification of organism species at the sequence level. Applications include identification of species and strains such as for microorganisms, fish, meats and grains, as well as identification of diverse organisms such as viruses.
The DNASIS product family includes DNASIS Microbial Identification System used for microorganism research and work, and DNASIS Taxon solutions used for identification of other organisms, offering solutions for researchers to use in their respective target fields. DNASIS Taxon solutions can also be deployed in a wide range of fields including cluster analysis for environmental microorganisms such as in soils, foreign substance testing of foods, and identification of meats.
HitachiSoft also markets DNASIS Microbial Identification System V2.0, which integrates the 16S rDNA database1 for microorganisms and conforms with the rapid identification method of microorganisms by genetic analysis in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia2.
116S rDNA database: A database published by the DNA Data Bank of Japan that contains entries on more than 83,300 species of microorganisms and bacteria.2Japanese Pharmacopoeia: This reference provides the official Japanese standard for drugs, as stipulated by Article 41 of the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act. The standard incorporates the opinions of the Pharmaceutical Affairs and Food Sanitation Council as gathered by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare, in order to ensure the suitable properties and quality of drugs in Japan.
